The Matson Motors workshop on McBain Street, Keith, with all four bays open
Est. 200013 McBain Street, Keith SA

The workshop on theDukes Highway.

Matson Motors is an independent four bay workshop in Keith. We look after the cars, utes, 4WDs and work trucks of the Tatiara district, and we get people moving again when something lets go halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Why people find us

Keith sits on the main road between two capitals.

The Dukes Highway runs Adelaide to Melbourne straight through town, and the Riddoch Highway heads south from here to the Limestone Coast. A lot of our work walks in the door because of it.

So we are used to both jobs: the service you booked in weeks ago, and the one that turned up unannounced with the bonnet already up.

What we do

Mechanical repairs, start to finish, in our own bays.

Four bays, hoists that take a light truck as easily as a hatchback, and the diagnostic gear to find out what is actually wrong before anyone quotes you.

01

Logbook and general servicing

Routine servicing for cars, utes and 4WDs, done in our own four bay workshop on McBain Street.

02

Engine diagnostics and fault scanning

Check engine light on, or a warning you cannot place. We scan it, check under the hood and under the car, and tell you plainly what we find.

03

Auto electrical, batteries and alternators

Charging faults, flat batteries and alternators that have given up. Common on a long drive and quick for us to test.

04

Cooling systems and water pumps

Overheating, leaks and water pump failures. We carry out the repair here rather than sending the job away.

05

4WD, ute and light truck work

The hoists take work vehicles, not just cars. Tippers, trays and wagons go through the same bays.

06

Breakdown diagnosis for travellers

If something has gone wrong on the highway and you have made it as far as Keith, ring us and we will look at it.

07

Wheels and tyres

Authorised dealer for Dynamic Wheel Co. and Dirty Life Race Wheels, so we can fit and supply aftermarket rims.

08

Pre trip checks

Heading off on a long run. We will go over it properly first, so you are not finding out about it halfway.

If the job is not on this list, ring and ask. It is a small town and we would rather tell you straight whether it is something we can take on.

The workshop

Same hands on the tools, job after job.

Matson Motors has been trading on McBain Street since 2000. It is a working shed, not a showroom: four bays, hoists, tool boards, and whatever came in that morning sitting on the hardstand out front.

On any given day there might be a tipper truck in the middle bay, a tray ute up on a hoist and a 4WD wagon waiting its turn. That mix is deliberate. A lot of the district runs work vehicles, and they need someone local who can put them on a hoist rather than send them up the highway.

We are a member of The Automotive Technician and of the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, which in practice just means we keep up with the training and the technical information the newer vehicles need.

Finding the fault

A scan, a look underneath, then a straight answer.

Warning lights are vague on purpose. A check engine light and a loss of power could be a dozen different things, and guessing at it gets expensive.

So the order of work is always the same. Scan it for codes, get it up on the hoist and look at it properly, then tell you what we have found and what it will take. If it is something we cannot do here, we will say so rather than keep the car.

Driving from SA to VIC and noticed a sound pulling up to Keith, Danny at the workshop was incredibly thorough and did multiple tests to ensure I would get back to VIC today safely. 10/10 would recommend!

While on our way from Melbourne to Adelaide, the car check engine and reduce power light came up and we pulled over to Matson Motors for a Check up. Josh from Matson motors came over to take a look. After a scan and a check under the hood and under the car, provided friendly professional advise which stop me sweating bullets. Obviously not my normal mechanic but the service alone and quick education and advice, really warranted 5 stars. Recommend Matson Motors if you require a mechanic.

We had battery and alternator issues on the way to Gather Round where the owner could not have done more to assist us with our problems and we just made it to Hahndorf. Many thanks, we really appreciate your support. Mike and Angela.

Had an issue with the car on the way to Portland. We called up and diagnosed the issue on the spot. It was a great help and they allowed us to complete the rest of our trip.
